On one of our Zodiac excursions we were allowed to tour a year-round, Ukrainian research station. The eleven men on a one-year shift are re-supplied only with the arrival of the new crew. It seemed like a friendly happy group, offering “home” brewed vodka at the bar. After eight months of winter with no visitors, they were happy to see new faces and talk about their lives. There were equal numbers of mechanics and scientists at the station to keep the life sustaining machinery running. The Brits built the station and sold it to the Ukrainians for one pound Sterling in about 1990. One can’t help but wonder what it would be like to spend a year there.
