I look toward the pool to see two doves chasing each other stopping momentarily at the pool for a sip of water. It’s warm out but cloudy and chilly enough to be wearing my “fuzzies.” I’m enjoying a mug of morning coffee wondering if I should be doing this enjoy-nature-thing a whole lot more often.
Four woodpeckers born this spring are now madly chasing each other in pairs around and through the eucalyptus and palms in our garden. This is the first morning of air-tag I’ve witnessed, as I’m usually flying off to work at this time of day. They seem to improve as I watch, flying closer, faster, and with sharper curves as the morning progresses.
The fattest hummingbird I’ve ever seen is out slurping up nectar from a thousand flowers below the deck. As I was making my mental comments about his prosperous life, he flew straight at me perhaps sensing my assessments only to stop and hum for a few seconds just inches from my elbow. He rotated from left to right as if showing off his lovely profile, then he sped off to play aerial games with a friend. OK, I stand corrected. He wasn’t fat. He is sleek and handsome in his ruby “scarf” and a spring green vest.
Smiling at myself, wondering about other mental assessments I mistakenly make every day.
